Lucia Carlson MEET THE PAINTERS Vivian Larson Judy Ohly My Front Porch Proud of Scandinavian heritage, Northem Minnesota artist Lucia Carlson has been painting Norwegian Rosemaling designs for over 35 years, and has recently learned Swedish Dalamaling Lucia created her business, "My Front Porch in the 1980s, selling her paintings all over the United States while raising her four children. In the 1990s, Lucia put her passion for painting on hold while she worked full time outside of the home. In 2014, she was diagnosed with cancer and, after going through chemotherapy treatment, became "cancer free." At that time, Lucia made the decision to return to her passion and is now excited to see where it leads her Being 100% Swedish, she loves bringing creative Scandinaian designs to wooden plates, pictures, cards and other products for others to enjoy. 90 years old with six kids, 11 grands, 23 great grands, and one great-great-grand with more on the way! Family has always been a big part of Vivian. But so has art. From the time she could hold a pencil drawing was her thing. She always wanted to be an artist Vivian married two weeks after high school graduation, six kids (in 10 years) created mass chaos but she still tried to find free time to dabble in art. That didn't work so well, so she had to quit for 15 years, but needed the outlet. The family moved here from North Dakota and Vivian started working at the State. By the end of her 26 years, she was running the craft room. Her teachings included painting. leather work, wood burning, ceramics, and more. She even drove the 40-passenger bus for Minneapolis trips! At age 59 Vivian retired from the State. That finally allowed her the time to take every art class she could find! When she was ready, she started teaching, first through Community Education, then in her home. She taught group art to both youth and parents, gave private lessons, and continued to create beautiful paintings. "If you're meant to do art, you will go over, around, under, whatever obstacles are in your way Her paintings are hanging in many homes near and far and the Ohly Art Gallery is very honored to now display her art! Judy (Bergerson) Ohly grew up on an 80-acre farm, 5 miles east of Barnum Her days were filled fishing, agate picking, biking, gardening, foraging. snowmobiling, horseback riding and anything outside. You will see reflections of her past in many of her paintings. For 46 years Judy worked in Rochester, MN. It was there she married her husband of 37 years, Lou, and they raised their two children Judy's desire to paint first took her to Russell Norberg (2010). Russell was a cousin to her father, and an accomplished educator and watercolor artist in Nisswa, MN. She didn't pursue art at that time, but it was her cousin, Joni Anderson giving lessons that really got her desire jumpstarted Judy painted through the most challenging job of her life, and through the death of her cherished mother and father-in-law. She painted and collected old picture frames, year after year until her house was overflowing Judy has over 70 paintings to date and all of her frames are recycled.
